2015 Seniors' Housing Forum, Saturday, Sept 26th

What is the Seniors' Housing Forum?
The Seniors'  Housing Forum Planning Committee, comprised of key community stakeholders, is presenting this one-day Seniors' Housing Forum for seniors, their families and caregivers, free of charge! The goal of the Forum is to educate participants about the range of housing options and community resources available for older adults and to guide individuals in planning appropriate future housing for themselves and/or significant others. This is the ninth time the Seniors’ Housing Forum has been held, with participant attendance in past years ranging from 650-850 and 50+ exhibitors in attendance.

Session Topics

A: Home & Independent Living: Health and Home 
(10:00 am – 11:15 am)
This session will focus on seniors’ housing options for home living in Apartments, Condos, and Houses, and will also discuss home living supports such as day programming and personal care services.  

B: New Housing Models 
(10:00 am – 11:15 am)
The session will include a panel of experts on several innovative seniors’ housing models such as co-housing and the village concept. Panelists will engage participants in a discussion of the merits and limitation of models.

C: Financial Literacy and Housing  
(10:00 am – 11:15 am)
This session provides information on strategies for planning finances to support housing choices. Guidance will also be offered on accessing income supports and other financial benefits. 

D: Supportive & Facility Living: Health and Home 
(11:30 am – 12:30 pm)
This session will provide an overview on supportive living, facility living, and designated assisted living options to help address the questions and concerns seniors face when choosing the optimal environment in which to live beyond independent living, as well as health supports available to complement these environments.  

E: Legal Documents You Should Have
(11:30 am – 12:30 pm)
This session offers guidance on future planning options including Guardianship, Trusteeship, Co-Decision Making, Personal Directives, Power of Attorney, and Wills.  

F: Dementia Care
(11:30 am – 12:15 pm)
This session will include a broad range of resources and topics related to dementia. A panel of experts will speak to related supports and services for seniors’ living with or caring for someone living with dementia; technology to allow dementia patients to age in place safely, and housing options specific to dementia.

G: Community Resources 
(2:00 pm – 3:00 pm)
This session will give an overview of some practical resources that allow seniors to age-in-place and receive support in the community. It will describe city-wide services offered by senior-serving organizations that provide resources designed to help seniors live safely and independently. 

H: Caregiver Support & Family Dynamics  
(2:00 pm – 3:00 pm)
This session outlines supports available to families and caregivers as seniors transition from one housing environment to another. Strategies for handling family dynamics, positive transitions, caring for the caregiver and stress related to moving will also be discussed. 

I: Downsizing/Managing Your Move 
(2:00 pm – 3:00 pm)
This session will provide an overview of things to consider when downsizing and planning your move; resources available to assist with this process; considerations for what to bring to your new home; and practical ways to minimize the challenges and stress associated with this transition.

*Break-out Session* Transportation 
(runs three times: 10:00 am, 11:30 am, 2:00 pm)
This break-out session will be repeated throughout the day for small groups. Sit in on this presentation to learn about the many city-wide public and private transportation options available to older adults and those with limited mobility. Participants will be provided with the information and resources to help develop a transportation plan to meet their individual needs and to help keep them mobile. 

*Break-out Session* Understanding Your Utility Choices
(runs three times: 10:00 am, 11:30 am, 2:00 pm)
Presented by Utilities Consumer Advocate. Attend this breakout session to learn more about electricity and natural gas options available to you, what the benefits of various choices are, how to deal with door-to-door sales, and what questions to ask when choosing an energy retailer.
